MSEG 4+1 BS/MMSE Degrees

The Materials Science and Engineering (MSEG) department offers a special 4+1 BS/MMSEprogram for highly-qualified undergraduate students from the University of Delaware. This program allows the student to earn a bachelor's degree from one of several partnering departments (including Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering, and Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences) and the Master's of Materials Science and Engineering (MMSE) degree in 5 years of full-time study at the University of Delaware. Students would normally apply in the spring of their junior year. For admission to this program the following minimum criteria will be applied:

An undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale at the end of their junior year.
A minimum of two letters of support from professors at the University of Delaware.

How to apply

Undergraduates

MSEG ensures that suitable undergraduate courses in materials science are available to the engineering departments. These courses include "Materials Science for Engineers," required for most engineering students, and more advanced courses available as electives for juniors and seniors wishing to pursue a specialization (minor) in materials science.

For high school and middle school science teachers

The Materials Science and Engineering Department and the Materials Research Society at the University of Delaware have started a demonstration program to help increase the awareness of materials science to the local community. At local schools, we perform interactive demonstrations with students ranging in age from 8-16 years old. We believe that by introducing materials science and all other sciences interactively.

Academic Qualifications

Graduate degrees (M.M.S.E. and Ph.D.) in Materials Science and Engineering are offered by the interdisciplinary Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the College of Engineering.

Academic Requirements for Advanced Degrees in Materials Science & Engineering

A student entering the Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program normally possesses a bachelor's (or higher) degree in a physical science or engineering discipline. A successful candidate for admission would minimally have taken courses to the following levels: mathematics, through partial differential equations: physics, including mechanics, heat, electricity, magnetism and introductory modern physics: chemistry, through physical chemistry; and introduction to materials science. In addition, courses in thermodynamics, field concepts, phase transformations,biology, biochemistry, and structure and mechanical properties of materials are considered very useful.
Admission requirements are normally (1) completion of a bachelor's program with a GPI of at least 3.2, (2) excellent letters of recommendation from faculty or scholars, and (3) a GRE total score (verbal plus quantitative) of at least 1150. One of the above norms may be waived in exceptional cases. Admission decisions are made by the Materials Science and Engineering Faculty on the advice of its Chairperson and/or Graduate student Recruitment Coordinator.
Stipend and tuition support is awarded to meritorious students. The authorization of such support resides with the Chairperson of the Department.
